Level One - Ontario Drivers License G1

If you are at least 16 years old, you can begin with Level One (G1). In Level One as a novice driver, you can begin learning to drive cars, vans or small trucks._

In Level One, six conditions help make your driving practice safer:

1.You must not drive alone. A licenced driver instructor or a fully licenced driver who has at least four years of driving experience must sit in the front passenger seat. Note: On an Ontario driver's licence, the photo of the licence holder with four or more years of driving experience has, under it, a red bar with four white dots. These are the only persons who can be in the front seat with you while you drive. This person's blood alcohol content must be less than .05 per cent, the legal suspension limit for fully licenced drivers.

2.You must ensure the accompanying driver is the only other person in the front seat.

3.You must not drink any alcohol if you are going to drive. Your blood alcohol content must be zero when you're driving.

4.You must not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.

5.Each person in the vehicle must have a seat belt, so everyone is protected and your vehicle is not over-crowded.

6.You must not drive on Ontario's "400-series" highways or on high-speed expressways such as the Queen Elizabeth Way, the Don Valley Parkway, the Gardiner Expressway and the E.C. Row Expressway. Your Driver's Handbook has a complete list of those highways.

Note: If your accompanying driver is a Dynamic Driver Training Instructor, you may drive on any road.

As a G1 licenced driver you a required to wait a minimum of 12 months before you are eligible for a G1 exit road test. However you can reduce that time to 8 months by completing a Ministry-approved driver education course like Dynamic Driver Training’s MTO Approved Beginner Driver Education course.

At the end of Level One, you must pass a road test (G1 Exit Ontario driving test) to move to Level Two.

Level Two (Ontario Drivers Licence G2)

In Level Two as a novice driver, which lasts at least 12 months, you can drive at any time of day or night, without an accompanying driver. You may also drive on any Ontario road.

Four important conditions still apply in Level Two:

1. You must not drink any alcohol if you are going to drive. Your blood alcohol must still be zero when you're driving.
2.  Each person must have a seat belt, so your vehicle is not over-crowded and every passenger is protected.

These rules apply between midnight and 5am:

1. In the first six months after recieving your G2 license, you're allowed to carry only one passenger aged 19 and under.
2.  After six months with your G2 licence and until you obtain your full G licence or turn 20, you are allowed to carry up to three passengers aged 19 and under.

Exemptions: These restrictions do not apply if you are accompanied by a fully licenced driver (with at least four years of driving experience) in the front seat or if your young passengers are members of your immediate family.

It will take at least 20 months from the time you start in Level One to the time you can take the Level Two test to earn full driving privileges. The final test measures your overall driving ability.

You must pass the Level Two road test to become a fully licenced class G driver.

Ontario Driver Testing

The Ontario driving written test is to determine whether or not you have a good understanding of the rules of the road and traffic signs. New drivers are required to take a written test. Individuals who are renewing, reinstating or exchanging their licence may also be required to take a written test.

Road tests assess your driving skills. You are tested on your ability to apply the rules of the road and safe driving practices. At the end of each test, the Examiner will give you a complete report of your skills and explain any mistakes you made. If you do not pass, after you have had more practice, you can make an appointment to take the test again but you must wait a minimum of ten days between exams.
